Manhattan Real Estate....Reflections from a 30 year Real Estate Broker!!
Happy Monday My Friend!! August 21st, 2017
Welcome to My Reflections on the Real Estate Industry!
Reflections from a 30 year Real Estate Broker
In order to best understand my views on NYC Real Estate,
allow me to introduce myself and share some of my background with you!
I have been a New Yorker all my life, except for the fact that I grew up in Astoria, Queens.
A perfect place for a kid to grow up, at least for me it was!
My parents were immigrants, immigrating to Queens in the 50's from an Island named Malta which is 6o miles south of Sicily!
My dad always had to repeat his story as I was so fascinated that he could come to NY with a couple of hundred dollars in his pocket & then set about creating a life for himself, my mother and brother and I.
My dads trade in Malta was as a mainly as a tailor in a dry cleaning shop!
In his days, most men in Malta had their suits made by a professional tailor. And he was great at it!!
He could hem your pants with his eyes blindfolded! and he could take in the waist of a dress in a few minutes.
One thing about my dad and that he passed onto me was
The Art of Incredible Customer Service.
He truly gave the client what they wanted. (and most of the time they wanted to be listened to & when they left his shop, they felt good about life, if only for a few mins)
My dad had an uncanny way of Not Making People Wrong!!
And that is a Trait that serves you very well in high stakes of New York City, RE.
But, what does all this have to do with Real Estate..?
Wait and I promise I will connect all the dots for you...
My dad saved enough money and since his dream was to come to the US, New York in particular (Thank God) and set sail. He tells me he found work as a tailor in a dry cleaning shop in NYC.
He knew how to save money & he knew how to make friends! He never perfected his English due to a head blow he suffered as a kid horsing around with friends.
I don't know if his English level would allow him in the States now that Trump is in office :)
I love that my dad was an immigrant who came to NY and created his dream and contributed to the lives of many!
So, after a while, he borrows some money from his brother who settled in Tampa, St Pete, Florida and opened his own Dry-cleaners Tailoring Shop in Astoria.
And this is where Real Estate comes in...within a few years he bought the building which housed his business and 3 rental properties above the store!!
